Making Bread With My Children

If you fancy giving bread making a go, follow this recipe! Myself, Miss 11 and Master 5 made this a few weeks ago when we had run out of bread! This recipe, taken from Sainsburys website, uses plain flour instead of strong white flour. It tastes lovely and was great fun to make.


1 sachet fast-action dried yeast

1 tsp white caster sugar

500g plain flour

1 tsp fine table salt

290ml warm water

1 tsp olive oil


  • Put the yeast, caster sugar and water in a bowl and leave for 5-10 minutes until it begins to foam

  • Sift the flour into a large bowl and mix in the salt.
  • Create a well in the flour and gently pour in the yeast, sugar and water mixture

  • Mix it together to form a dough.
  • Dust your surface with a little flour and knead the dough for 15-20 minutes. The dough needs to be smooth and stretchy.
  • Shape the dough and place onto a baking tray which has been dusted with a little flour.
  • Place a little oil onto a sheet of cling film and spread it over. Then place over the dough.

  • Leave the dough in a warm place to raise for an hour (until it has doubled in size).
  • Preheat oven to 230oC, fan 210oC or gas mark 8.
  • Remove Clingfilm from dough and dust the top with a little flour.
  • Turn oven down to 200oC, fan 180oc or gas mark 6 and bake for 20 minutes.
  • The bread is ready when it’s risen and golden.
  • Place bread on a cooling rack and to check that it is cooked it should sound hollow.
  • Enjoy!
